Your Northern Territory holiday is not complete without a stay at Uluru, formerly called Ayers Rock. There is great accommodation waiting for you, from five-star resorts to camp sites at Yulara, just outside the Uluru National Park. This park is actually combined with the Kata Tjuta National Park to become the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and is World Heritage listed.
The Rock stands at 348 metres and has immense cultural significance for the Anangu, the local Aboriginal people. The first thing to do is visit the Uluru-Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre to acclimatise yourself with the area and gain an understanding from this award-winning display.
For information on the geology, history, or flora and fauna go to Yulara Visitors Centre. To really understand the vastness of the area, enjoy a helicopter or light plane flight.
You can join with the Anangu for a walking tour at the base or Uluru. Learn more about their bush foods and their ancient culture. Grab a map from the Park Information Centre and take some of the many self-guided walks, enjoying the natural flora in the superb Uluru weather.
Join everyone at the Uluru viewing platforms at sunrise and sunset to get the best photographs. The colours of Uluru change with the changing sun and this produces wonderful photos for the professional and amateur.
You may even like to ride a Harley to Kata Tjuta. This collection of massive red sandstone rock domes are 500 million years old and about 30 kilometres from Uluru. This sacred site is also part of the Anangu heritage.
